Point to Point Action returns to East Cork this weekend

Point to Point Action returns to East Cork this weekend

This Sunday sees the return of Point to Point racing to Killeagh for its usual mid- January fixture held on the grounds of Joe & Bernie Hennessy at Knockane, Killeagh, Co. Cork. The track is situated about 1 mile off the N25 Cork/Waterford Road between Killeagh & Castlemartyr.

This event is always popular with the local East Cork & West Waterford Public and this year's event promises to be one of the strongest cards at Knockane in recent times.

With 98 entries throughout the quality six race card, the feature undoubtedly is the Fogarty Bros. Car Sales Open Lightweight with some of the country's finest pointers looking to battle it out to take home the Murphy Memorial Cup. Entries for this the 5th race include last year's leading Irish Point to Point fancy for the Cheltenham Festival Sweet As A Nut (Michael Barry, Fermoy). Six time track winner & 6th in last years Foxhunter Chase at Cheltenham, Minella For Value (Declan Queally). 2016 winner of this race and three time winner this season 'between the flags' A Decent Excuse (Eugene & Maxine O'Sullivan). B L Swagger for Tipperary trainer Sam Curling. To top it all, 2014 County Hurdle winner (Grade 3) at the Cheltenham Festival and Mersey Novices Hurdle (Grade 1) winner at Aintree Grand National meeting, Lac Fontana (Paurick O'Connor), with multiple champion jockey & leading amateur Derek O'Connor up.

The previous two winners of the Tattersalls 5yo Geldings Maiden both recently won on the track over the Christmas Period. 2016 winner Knocknanuss won at Fontwell Park for trainer Gary Moore meanwhile 2017 victor Minella Encore won the bumper at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival for Willie Mullins with his son Patrick in the plate. This Sunday's card is sure to bring up another future star in the making.

The track was inspected by the Turf Club on Friday and the going is soft. Clerk of the Course Frank Motherway commented 'The track is in superb condition considering the rain we have got throughout the winter so far and we are very much looking forward with great excitement to another great days racing at Killeagh Point to Point this Sunday.  There has been hard work put in by the committee over the last few weeks and months and hopefully the public will come out to support us'.

On the day itself, the forecast is set to be dry and calm for racing which should be perfect with the exquisite view of the whole track as punters can see all five fences clearly across the valley. It has been described as "one of the most atmospheric point to points in the country". TV's will be available to watch the action from Fairyhouse too.

Racing is not the only agenda on the day. We have hired a Face Painter to keep all your children happy throughout and there will be no cost to the public on the day for this service. There will be refreshments and catering facilities on site to keep punters happy during racing also.

First Race this Sunday, 14th January is due off at 12.30pm and with a big crowd expected at the popular East Cork venue, patrons are reminded to arrive early as gates open at 11am.
