UK Point-to-Point Round Up - 14th February

UK Point-to-Point Round Up - 14th February

The UK point-to-point action managed to survive the inclement weather conditions last weekend with three meetings taking place around the country.
Friars Haugh held their second meeting of the season which saw four former Irish pointers in the winner’s enclosure.

The eleven-year-old Shantou Magic (pictured) secured his second win of the season at Friars Haugh when he took the Ladies open. Trained to success in a five-year-old maiden by Eoghan O’Grady at Affane in 2012, Shantou Magic also won five races under rules for Charlie Longsdon.

Now trained and owned by Will Ramsey who trained a double on the day, the Charlotte Dun-ridden winner was prominent throughout before taking up the lead in the final half mile to win by an easy eight lengths over his runner-up.

Other winners on the day included Pieceoftheaction, who was third on his debut at Lingstown in November for Andrew Slattery. The Susan Grant-trained winner is now two from two in UK point-to-points having won at the first meeting held at Friars Haugh this season.

The Eoin Doyle-trained Leavethelighton who won an Open at Ballindenisk in December 2016, made amends for his new hander, John Dawson in the Men’s open following his early exit at the second fence the week before.

Also winning at Friars Haugh was Left Back in the open maiden on what was the former Michael Goff’s-trained runner’s third appearance of the season for Nick Alexander.

Chaddesley Corbet in Worcestershire also held its second meeting of the season with five of the seven winners on the day graduating from the Irish point-to-point field.

Optimised, who was fourth in a four-year-old maiden at Dawstown in May 2016 when under the care of Pat Doyle, made an impressive winning start to his UK point-to-point career having won the open maiden by ten lengths over Mistercobar who was runner-up at Tyrella 12 months ago for Graham McKeever.

Now trained by Phil Rowley, Optimised was also placed twice under rules for Gordon Elliot and Gigginstown House stud. The six-year-old son of Stowaway was sold for £18,000 to Highflyer Bloodstock at the Goffs UK September sale.

Seamusjay, a faller at Tralee in 2016 when with Aidan Fitzgerald, registered his second UK point-to-point win when he was the 15 length winner of the Restricted race for his new handler, Gearald Bailey on what was his third start so far this season.

Other winners on the day included the nine-year-old Battle Dust, who was enjoying his second UK point-to-point having won his six-year-old maiden at Dungarvan two years ago for Rosemary Rooney.

Also winning at Chaddesley Corbet was Ni Sin E Mo Ainm in the Ladies Open, who was runner-up in a five-year-old maiden at Borris in 2013 for Nick Kiely and who has now won four UK point-to-points.

Former Maralin winner Macs Gift who was runner-up at Thorpe Lodge at the end of January, won the Intermediate race providing his handler Philip Rowley with a treble on the day.

William Money, who was a winner at Tramore for Colin Bowe in 2011, took the Club members race for David Brace and has shown to be a consistent servant for his new connections having not finished out of the first four on his six starts to date.
