13 length victory for Know The Score on rules debut

Know The Score picked-up where he had left off in Ballinaboola, by running out a wide-margin winner on his rules debut in a Towcester bumper on Wednesday.

Sent off as the favourite for his racing debut at the Wexford venue in November, the Flemensfirth gelding, who had cost the Monbeg team €55,000 as a three-year-old at the Derby sale, destroyed his 12 rivals to defeat Senior Citizen by six lengths in the hands of Harley Dunne.

His handler at the time, Sean Doyle, did not hold back just how highly regarded the bay gelding was following the success, in comments that have proved to be worth listening to.

“This is as good a horse as I have had.

“He was nearly ready to run last year and just got a little bit weak. He has a massive pedigree. He is from a real good family and is such an easy horse to do anything with. We gave a good price for him when we bought him but when the hammer fell we thought that he was for nothing as he is by Flemensfirth out of a Saddlers Wells mare and they would be as scarce as hens teeth.

“If this lad doesn’t go the whole way to the top, I really don’t know what you need.”

That from a trainer who has already saddled the likes of The Last Samuri, Holywell, and Grade 1 winner The World’s End to all run in point-to-points.

Unsurprisingly, when Know The Score was offered at the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltemham November sale, he gained top billing, and was eventually sold to David Pipe for a final bid of £380,000 – one of the highest ever prices paid at public auction for a point-to-pointer.

Making his debut for Pipe’s yard and carrying the colours of new owners The Angrove Family in a bumper at Towcester, the now five-year-old was sent off as a warm favourite and justified that price.

Pulling clear round the home bend in the hands of Tom Scudamore, Know The Score, crossed the line with 13-lengths to spare over his rivals in an impressive performance.
