Sizing Coal dominates in Fairyhouse Hunter Chase

Sizing Coal dominates in Fairyhouse Hunter Chase

Sizing Coal picked-up where he had left off at Oldtown just two weeks earlier by running out a convincing winner of the AtTheRaces Hunter Chase at Fairyhouse on Saturday.

The 10-year-old had finished third behind leading sort Gilgamboa on his hunter chase debut at Down Royal over Christmas, however with nothing of that class in Saturday’s 2m 5f contest, Jim Dreaper’s charge was able to dominate from the front.

Making all of the running under Jamie Codd, the Presenting gelding eased clear of his rivals from the second-last and had the race sewn-up once negotiating the final obstacle.

Former winner Salsify had loomed as a danger rounding the home bend, however the now 13-year-old was unable to sustain his challenge and it eventually fell to the patiently ridden Rossvoss to come through and take the second position, albeit eight-lengths in arrears of the comfortable winner.

Salsify, the former Cheltenham Festival winner, took third, with Eddies Miracle, on his first racecourse outing since taking a heavy fall at Cork before Christmas, finishing in fourth.

The success of Sizing Coal provided the winning connections of Jamie Codd, Jim Dreaper and Alan Potts with back-to-back victories in the race following the success of Aupcharlie 12 months earlier.

Connections indicated that Sizing Coal could well return to their local course at Easter to take in the Joseph O’Reilly Hunter Chase before eyeing up a tilt at the Champion Hunter Chase at the Punchestown Festival later in the spring.
