CHELTENHAM: Derek O'Connor confirmed to ride Edwulf in Cheltenham Gold Cup

Eleven-time champion and winning most point-to-point jockey Derek O'Connor is set to maintain his partnership with the JP McManus-owned Edwulf in a bid for glory in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup next week.

The pairing was secured following the horses remarkable comeback to land the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown last month.  Edwulf has made a miraculous recovery from collapsing in the final stages of the four-mile National Hunt Chase at last years' Cheltenham Festival to booking a place in this years' running of jump racing's most coveted prize.

O'Connor has enjoyed Cheltenham glory in the past with two winners at the 2011 Festival and, most recently,  in the aforementioned National Hunt Chase aboard Minella Rocco in 2016.

If O'Connor is to be successful come Friday week and lift the Gold Cup, he will become only the 5th amateur in 88 running's to achieve such a feat. Sam Waley Cohen rode his father's Long Run to victory  in 2011 and you would have to go back thirty years to find the next amateur jockey to enjoy Gold Cup Glory.

The Joseph O'Brien-trained  gelding, who began his career between the flags for Vinny Halley, is currently a 20/1 shot for the blue-riband event and will provide connections with a fairytale day if he can put the woes of last year's festival behind him.
