POINT-TO-POINT ARCHIVES: 1986

Lisgoold on January 5th saw the 1986 season underway with Pat Healy on Hard Station taking the opening race and as well as scoring a double on the day when Ballyedmond Hill took the first division of the maiden race.

 
Cheltenham Foxhunter winner 
 
There was a double at Patrickswell for Ted Walsh on Attitude Adjuster and That’s Serious. Walsh rode his 142nd and final point-to-point winner that season. One of the leading Horses of the Year was Attitude Adjuster. Ridden by Ted Walsh he won went on to win the Foxhunters at Cheltenham for the Mouse Morris yard some weeks later. Another Irish hope Mr Donovan finished third. 
 
Aintree Foxhunter winner
 
At Liverpool Eliogarty scored under his owner Caroline Beasley in the Foxhunters. The pair had taken the Cheltenham Foxhunters in 1983 when trained by B Kelly but this time the handler was D J G Murray Smith. However at Punchestown the Enda Bolger partnered Ah Whist for P.P.Hogan beat a Lorcan Wyer partnered Attitude Adjuster by five lengths to stake his claim for the top award. Ah Whist was reversing a neck defeat that he had taken at the hands of Attitude Adjuster previously at Thurles. 
 
Another man to partner Attitude Adjuster was Enda himself who took a four runner Joseph O’Reilly on him. At Dungarvan Tom Costello doubled up on Always Talking and Slieve Feilim while Liam Burke won the Open on Bobby Miller. Pauline Gavin won the four-and-five-year-old maiden at Gowran on Artistic Love in the colors of Colm Gavin. 
 
At Knocklong Enda Bolger scored a four-time en route to the title on Animahron, Team Aproach, Dangerous Game & Giolla Laura. At Castletown Robert Steele (Let Him By), Paul Larkin (Cherryvalley Girl), Tony Martin (Jet Black) and Liam Lennon (Mr Gaffney) were all successful but it was John Lombard who left the day with a double on Mr Donovan for J P McManus and Bundle Boy for Mrs E J O’Grady. 
 
Useful chaser for John Mulhern Wolf Of Badenoch won his maiden at Patrickswell under Gerry O’Neill in the colours of Mrs J O Onions who is now a familiar face at race meetings around the country as a Turf Club steward. John Durkan took the Farmers race at Bray on his father’s Ballymiles. 
 
At Kilworth Michael Winters steered  Kanturk Warrior to success and rode his final winner in 1986 in point-to-points. Eleanor Broderick took the final race on Ashpit. There was a Kildorrery treble for Tom Costello who was only beaten by one winner by Enda Bolger in the title race. The opening winner was Sirrah Jay who went on to be a talented sort for Geoff Hubbard. Over The Bar and Grand Cheval were the other winners. 
 
First winner
 
Downpatrick-based point-to-point handler Brian Hamilton rode his first winner at the Enniskillen Airport aboard Anns Penny. Enda Bolger won at Kilmallock on Fearless Leader for P P Hogan but Bolger would later train him himself and became a useful track performer. At Tyrella Craig Caven secured a 100% record in point-to-points steering his only ride in the sport to success in the Confined Hunt race which was Nightmaster in the colours of J McAuley.
 
Willie Mullins won the maiden at Lingstown on John Codds Ogan Spa. At The Pigeons Joe Gibbons won on Ballymakenny and rode his final of 17 winners in 1986. Liam Keogh scored a double on Ribbon Of Darkness and Colonel Lemon. At Caherlistrane Pat Bohan won on Lackagh Lad to get his career off the mark. 
 
At Lingstown John Dagg won on Jacks Back in the Open. Liam Clancy owned the first two home in the Hunt race at Sligo but choose well as he partnered Sharalco to success over Balybrook who was ridden by Showjumper Francie Kerins. 
 
First winner
 
David Christie got off the mark in points on Best Sevice at the Route fixture on Down Royal racecourse and followed up on the same horse four days later at Ballymena. At Tallanstown John Fowler steered Mrs T Mathews Black Economy to success. He rode his 75th final point-to-point winner in 1986.
 
Solid As A Rock in the colors P V Doyle won the maiden at Banntown from the Wicklow Hunt and went on to become a top chaser for Martin Pipe and Reg Akehurst. John Berry wore the P P Hogan silks to partner Underway at Thurles and won the first of nine Eastern titles on the bounce. 
 
The North Down hunt race at Down Royal and Robert Patton rode a treble on Vulpit, Glen Invader and Glentab. A Nenagh double for Donie Hassett on He Is Gready and Merry Madness. Kinsale on Thursday 29th May completed the season. Tom Costello began with a double but Enda Bolger replied with a double to take the title.
