O'Neill & Codd tied at the top of the Leading Riders standings

O'Neill & Codd tied at the top of the Leading Riders standings

It is very tight at the top of the leading riders' board with Jamie Codd and Barry O'Neill currently tied at 34. Eleven times champion Derek O'Connor sits in third on 29, the three senior jockeys have dominated the leading riders ranks in recent years.

Jamie Codd, former two times Champion, went in to last weekend on 30, one behind the current Champion O'Neill. A double on Saturday for Codd at Loughanmore, where O'Neill managed one winner levelled the table at 32. A further two winners a piece over the weekend and the Co. Wexford natives head into the remaining nine weekends on par.

At this point in the season last year O'Neill lead Codd 38 to 34 a lead which he carried into the final weekend of the season and ultimately the difference by which he secured his first riders title.

Liz Lalor is currently on eight wins for the season, five ahead of second place Jody Townend. Lalor looks to be on her way to her seventh title, fourth in a row.

Last year's joint leading novice riders Shane Fitzgerald and Liam Quinlan are both towards the front of the leader board once again, with 6 and 5 winners respectively. However, Sean O'Keeffe is the current leader on a season best of 7, enjoying a very healthy strike rate of 41.2%.

Donnchadh Doyle is currently heading up the leading handler table on 20. Doyle has thus far had an extremely profitable season. From his base in Co.Wexford, Doyle sent out eight winners over two days at the beginning of March which included a four timer at Ballyaurthur. If Doyle can replicate the 17 winners achieved last season for this remaining period, he will surpass his previous season best of 28 by some way, a total that was achieved in 2015 when sharing the handlers title with Colin Bowe.

Bowe is just three adrift of the top position, and with a total of 91 horses under his care with hunter certs this season, some 57 individual having runs thus far, there is surely some fire power remaining in his Co. Wexford stable to lay down strong claims to a fourth consecutive handlers title.

Pat Doyle currently sits in third on fifteen, of which twelve have come in the Spring season. Sydney Paget has provided the Co. Tipperary based trainer with five of these succeses and is the current leader in the Champion Pointer title. Milan Dancer currently has four wins to her name, with A Decent Excuse, Lagan Island and Longhouse Music each having visited the winners enclosure on three occasions this season.
