UK Point-to-Point Round Up - 11th April

Eight UK point-to-points took place over the weekend with 15 former Irish pointers gaining success for their new connections.

Saturday 07th April

Higham, Suffolk


The 12-year-old Master Workman recorded his sixth UK point-to-point success when he ran out the 12 length winner of the Mixed open for the David Kemp yard.

The son Posidonas won his five-and-six-year-old maiden at Tyrella in 2011 for Sean Doyle and was subsequently sold at the Brightwells April sale for £16,000 to his current connections.

The winner of the Club member’s race on the day was the former J.P. Dempsey-trained Ballybough Gorta who won his four-year-old maiden at Oldcastle in 2011 before going onto win eight chases on the track for his then trainer Nick Mitchell.

Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire

SPOTLIGHT HORSE: Encounter A Giant

Encounter A Giant continued his good run of form this spring to win his second UK point-to-point from three starts since February when he was the easy winner of the restricted race having seen off this year’s Dowth Hall winner, Double You Be by 24 lengths.

The six-year-old son of Kalinisi had ran twice for Mrs. John Ross in Ireland last season and opened his account at Garthorpe in an open maiden for his new handler, Diana Ralph.

Stoleaway was another to continue his good form as he claimed his second consecutive success in the confined race for his handler Philip Rowley who trained a double on the day.

A winner at Killaloe three years ago for Paurick O’Connor, the son of Stowaway won a hunter chase at Bangor-On-Dee two years ago.

Ystradowen, Glamorgan


Captain Kennit continued his consistency when he took the club members race for his owner and handler David Gibbs.

Formerly in the care of Aidan Kennedy, the son of Black Sam Bellamy who was bought for £2,200 at the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot May sale in 2016, has not finished out of the first four in 10 of his 12 UK starts to date.

Sunday 08th April

Andoversford, Gloucestershire


The Well Road who won his five-year-old geldings’ maiden for the late William Codd at Stradbally in 2014, took his second UK point-to-point in decisive fashion when he ran out the 25 length winner of the intermediate race for his handler Sam Jukes.

Toby Maguire, third at Loughrea in October in a four-year-old maiden for John Hanlon, won the restricted race for Charles Levinson having been bought for £14,500 by Highflyer Bloodstock in the Tattersalls Ireland Ascot November sale.

Also scoring at Andoversford was Hellorsboston in the ladies open race for Graham Tawell. The now ten-year-old won his four-year-old maiden at Loughanmore in 2012 for Donnchadh Doyle before going on to win four races on track for Donald McCain.

Stone recorded his first win of the season and what was his 10th UK point-to-point win to date, when he won the men’s open providing Sam Jukes with a double on the day.

Badbury Rings, Dorset

SPOTLIGHT HORSE: Blackwater Bramble

Blackwater Bramble, who won his five-year-old maiden at Dromahane in April 2016 for T.J Nagle in the colours of Denman’s owner Paul Barber with David Martin, ran out a six length winner of the intermediate race for his new handler, Jade Barber.

Cherrybrook, Devon


Newlands Cross (pictured) won on his UK point-to-point debut when he took the open maiden for his owner and handler, Tom Malone. The six-year-old have four Irish point-to-point runs with his latest run coming at Lingstown in March where he was third Arc Chros for John Hanlon.

The Dean Summersby-trained Honest Deed secured his fourth UK point’s win of his career when he was the two-and-a half-length winner of the intermediate race. The son of Kadeed was runner-up in the confined maiden at Ballyvodock in January last year for P J Healy.

Former Ballindenisk winner Ballybane recorded his third consecutive victory in UK point-to-points when he took the confined race by two and a half lengths for Claire Harris having also won at Buckfastleigh and Kilworthy this spring.

Charm Park, North Yorkshire


Calisson D’Alene who was fourth at Rathcannon last May for Denis Murphy, opened his account in UK points when he returned home the three length winner of the maiden conditions race for his new handler Jane Kent.

Barbury Racecourse, Wiltshire


The Alan Hill-trained Hawkhurst won his fourth race this season when he took the club members race by 12 lengths for the Alan Hill yard. A winner at Boulta in 2014 for Denis Leahy, the son of Flemensfirth was formerly trained by Paul Nicholls for JP McManus.
