Tommy Wade Passes Away aged 80

P2p.ie were saddened to hear of the death of Tommy Wade a familiar a face at many point to point meetings around the country.

Wade was a very successful showjumper in the 1950’s and 1960’s and was best known for partnering top show jumper Dundrum. Standing at only 15 hh, Tommy recognised his ability early and the pair quickly became the peoples champion.

Many remember fondly watching the pair winning the Grand Prix and Nations cup in 1960’s and winning the Aga Khan in 1963.  That same year, Tommy Wade won all five international classes at the Dublin Horse Show.

Wade was also Chef D’Equipe for many years and claimed over 30 Nations Cup wins. Two highlights remembered by many where when Ireland won the Team Gold Medal at the European Championships in 2001 and Dermott Lennon’s Individual Word Championship win in 2002 whilst under Wades reign.

The Tipperary native was induced into the Irish Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 and is currently the only equestrian sports person to be presented with this award.

Wade in latter years took a keen interest in buying young national hunt stock and selling them as stores along with sons Robert and Ronan.

The family also had horses in training with Pat Doyle a particular one which stands out is Brindisi Breeze who won his point to point maiden at Loughrea in the colours of his son Robert Wade.  The son of Kings’ Theatre then went on to claim the Albert Bartlett Grade 1 Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival for trainer Lucinda Russell.

We would like to offer our sincerest condolences  to his wife Felicity, daughter Maria and sons Robert, Alan and Ronan.
