Point-to-Point community mourns the loss of Oliver McCann

We at P2P.ie are saddened to hear of the sudden passing on Monday of Oliver McCann, a well-known figure at point-to-point’s, particularly within the northern region.

McCann’s voice will have been familiar to many, as he carried out the duties of course commentator at many point-to-points in the region for a number of years.

In subsequent years, he continued his involvement with the sport as both an owner, and also as a punter within the betting ring.

As an owner, McCann enjoyed a successful association with the former point-to-pointer Direct Access, owning a share in the successful Roselier gelding.

Direct Access ran twice between the flags in the northern region at the beginning of his career, finishing third to Cheltenham Gold Cup-placed Truckers Tavern on his debut at Maralin, before coming out and winning at Loughanmore a fortnight later.

On both occasions, Direct Access was ridden by Warren Ewing, who is now a leading handler in the region.

Under rules, Direct Access would win the 2005 renewal of the Listed Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle, before running in that years Aintree Grand National, in a track career which saw him win nine races for trainers Len Lungo and Nicky Richards.

A resident of Loughgall in Co. Armagh, Oliver is survived by his wife Teresa, three sons John, Paul and Aidan, and daughter Claire.

Oliver was laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon at St. Patrick’s Church, Stonebridge, and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
