21-year-old Jamie Scallan got off the mark for the season aboard Outonpatrol in the four-year-old mares’ maiden at Borris House last week. The daughter of Stowaway had been placed on her debut at Dromahane a few weeks earlier and the novice rider maintained the partnership aboard the grey, who ran out an impressive winner.
The Wexford native has had 114 rides between-the-flags and now in his fourth season riding, Scallan has partnered 6 winners to date. Based with Sean Doyle, the five pound claimer could be set for a busy Spring campaign as he bids to put his experience to good use.

Are you from a racing background?
I wouldn’t really be from a racing background. When I was 14 I decided I wanted to start riding, so I went down to Mary Doyle and she taught me how to ride.
What was your first job in racing after that?
When I left school I went to Willie Codd’s for four years, before going to Sean Doyle’s after William passed away.
I have been with Sean for about a year now. We would have around 40 riding out in there, so we are kept busy.
Do you school or ride out for anyone else?
I go to Moses McCabe’s on a Tuesday and I give Darragh Berry a hand as well. I still go down to Mary and Leo Doyle too, they have a couple in.
You rode your first winner aboard Flabello who was trained by Willie Codd, around Maralin back in 2016?
That was a great day, I had ridden him plenty of times before, so I knew him well. I actually had my first ride on him as well around Lingstown the year before.
Outonpatrol was impressive when winning at Borris last week? Sean has been giving you plenty of support?
I would say she is a very good filly, we liked her a lot at home. We were fairly confident all week that she would do the job.
Sean has been very good to me since I started, he gave me loads of rides last season and I have ridden plenty for him this year as well.
Have you ambitions for this season?
Just to get as many rides and ride as many winners as I can.
What are your plans for the future?
I will stay amateur and ride away in point-to-points.
What is your take on the opportunities for novice riders?
The novice rider’s races are a help but it is hard to get rides in them, there doesn’t seem to be as many older horses anymore. I think having novice rider opens is nearly better, as it gives lads a chance to ride better horses.
Any horses we should be watching out for?
There is a nice three-year-old Flemensfirth horse in Sean’s that I think goes well.
How about another rider you think might be up-and-coming?
Tiernan Power and Jack Hendrick are two good lads. Jack rides out for Cormac Doyle and they use the same gallop as us, we both started out with William Codd as well.
Is there a trainer we should be watching out for?
Sean buys a nice horse, they have them fairly straight when they run, he wouldn’t miss much and puts a lot of time into them.
Who has been your biggest influence in racing or who would you look up to?
I would have followed Jamie Codd since I was young. He was a great help when I was in William’s, giving me plenty of advice with schooling and that.
Do you do any sport outside of racing?
I would play a bit of hurling in the summer with Kilmore.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Keep your head down, work hard and keep your mouth closed!
