Ciaran Fennessy has announced his retirement from race-riding. The Fermoy native had forged a very successful career between the flags partnering 181 winners in total.
Ciaran’s first ride was aboard Tubberadane at Dungourney in 2005. The son of Germany was owned by his father Liam Fennessy.
Humble Jim supplied Ciaran Fennessy with his first winner when winning the five-year-old and upwards geldings maiden at Cloyne in March 2007.
In 2011 Fennessy was crowned champion novice rider having partnered 16 winners and finishing 10th in the overall title. He was also the sixth most popular rider that season with 171 rides and was also the safest jockey of the top ten riders with just eight falls.
His best seasons were in 2014-15 and 2015-16 season having finished up on 26 winners for each season with a strike rate of 18.6% and 19.3% respectively.
He won his first regional title in 2015-16 when winning the HRI Southern Title ending the domination of Derek O’Connor and Mikey O’Connor, as the pair had won that title between them for the past 10 years.
In October of 2016 Fennessy took a horrible fall from Lively Article at Rathcannon and sustained a fractured pelvis which saw him miss the remainder of the season. Fennessy only returned to action in January 2018 and partnered six winners from 33 rides.
Over Fennessy’s career he partnered 29 doubles and 4 trebles and had 1524 rides.
His biggest supporters were Eugene O’Sullivan (21 winners), Michael Barry (8 winners), Michael Winters (10), Paul O’Flynn (16) and Sean O’Brien (10).
Fennessy was also associated with many good horses some of which include; Shanahans Turn who he partnered when winning his point-to-point maiden at Dawstown.
Shanahan’s Turn was then sold to the Potts Family and won the Galway Plate for trainer Henry de Bromhead.
Golantilla is another to mention the lightly raced sort finished third to Sizing John in the Grade 1 Future Champions hurdle at Leopardstown.
Fennessy won aboard the son of Golan at Avaune before he joined the Alan Fleming and Barry Connell team.
