Mahler enjoys 11th points winner of the season

The Beeches stud in Co. Waterford is well renowned for standing some top-class sires, and Mahler is a name that has emerged in recent years for producing many winners both between the flags and under rules.

Mahler is a son of the successful Galileo, who won the Ballysax Stakes initially, before going on to win a Group 3 Derby Trial, a Group 1 Epsom Derby, a Group 1 Irish Derby, and a King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, which was also a Group 1 contest.

Mahler himself won a Queen's Vase, he was a runner up in the St Leger, and as a three-year-old, he finished third in the Melbourne Cup.

From his first crop it certainly was clear that Mahler was going to be an exciting sire for the National Hunt scene with the likes of Chris's Dream, Sutton Place, Ok Corral, Ornua, Glen Forsa, Ms Parfois all being competitive at the top level, all winning some very decent prizes at various points.

Chris's Dream changed hands for £175,000 following his impressive maiden hurdle success at Limerick back in 2017 for handler Eugene O’Sullivan, who before this had found success when landing his four-year-old geldings’ maiden at Boulta in 2016.

He won in Graded company a year after this purchase for Henry De Bromhead before making an impressive chasing debut at Navan and he duly stepped up to Grade 2 company two months later once again at Navan when scoring under Rachel Blackmore. He now holds entries in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase and Grade 1 Gold Cup at Cheltenham, whilst he also holds an entry in the Randox Health Grand National at Aintree a month later.

De Bromhead is also the trainer of another promising son of Mahler in Ornua, who won his five-year-old geldings’ maiden at Rathcannon in 2016 for J.E Casey. He has since gone on and been enjoying a very successful career under rules with his best victory being when he landed the Grade 1 Doom Bar Maghull novice chase at Aintree in April 2019.

Mahler has also been enjoying success between the flags, having produced 11 winners and 13 placed runners from 67 runners since the beginning of October in points.

His most recent pointing success came on Sunday at Tallow when Kilbree Warrior recorded a victory in the five-and-six-year-old mares’ maiden for James Collender when storming home 12 lengths clear of her rivals.

Brooksway Fair provided him with his first four-year-old success of 2020 when he took the four-year-old maiden at Knockmullen house for handler Denis Murphy under Jamie Codd and he will now head to the Cheltenham February following his victory.

Mahler is clearly popular with point-to-point handlers with many of his graduates being well received in the sales ring alongside their undoubted talent.
