Warren Ewing thrilled with his sale-topper

The impressive Warren Ewing-trained Tyrella winner, Only The Bold, topped Friday's Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale.

"I was delighted with the sale on Friday, I think that he is a very good horse," said Ewing.

"I was glad to get paid for him, sometimes you sell horses and you haven't done enough with them.

"We were expecting a big price for him, he is by the right sire and the right dam, the dam has bred two winners from two runners."

Changing hands for £215,000, he is not the first horse of Ewing's to to join Welsh trainer Evan Williams, as the Antrim handler sold Williams Bold Plan for £195,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham January Sale back in 2018.

With that horse landing a decent Haydock prize worth £50,000 back in November, it was not surprise he returned to that source.

"I sold Evan a good horse before by Jeremy called Bold Plan, he's turned out to be a good horse and that is probably why he got involved on Friday, I told him that he (Only The Bold) is a better horse than him.

"I'm very happy that he went to Evan, he is a very good man.

"I hope that he turns out everything that he promises to be, hopefully a Grade 1 horse. He's probably as good a horse as I've ever had.

Ewing is looking forward to a number of horses that he has yet to run this season, some of which he is really looking forward to.

"We've got about another 12 to run. I have a very nice Getaway horse, I think a lot of him, as well as a Sholokhov horse."

Ewing, a large-scale fish merchant in Belfast, begins his day very early each morning, and along with the assistance of his son Sam, Ewing is able to strike a balance between the horse and fishing businesses.

"It's just myself and Sam riding out at the minute, he gives me a hand."

"We are the fish merchants in Belfast, we supply all of the hotels and restaurants in the north. I'm heavily involved in it.

"I get up in the morning at five, and I feed the horses. Then my son gets up, I go to work, he goes to school, and I'm usually home for about half past one. I start riding out then.

"I live right beside the yard, the gallop runs by the shed, we have two walkers going, and we tack up six at a time and ride away."
