Bushmans Pass springs a surprise under Johnny Barry

Bushmans Pass sprung a 20/1 shock in the p2p.ie geldings’ point-to-point bumper when he stayed-on best of all close home to open his account at the fourth time of asking.

The six-year-old was sent off as one of the outsiders in the eight-strong line-up having failed to break his maiden between the flags, posting a best effort of a fourth-place finish in a Fairyhouse unplaced maiden last month.

Brian Barry had been in the saddle on that occasion, with his elder brother Johnny taking over on Mick Flannery’s Virtual gelding and they came from what may have seen an unlikely position leaving the back straight.

As that pair came under pressure, at the head of affairs Eoin O’Brien looked to have gained the upper hand over his rivals aboard the sole four-year-old in the race, On The Tide, off the home bend, and Seamus Nevilles’ Lisronagh fourth still looked the likely winner racing inside the final furlong.

However, his stride began to shorten as Bushmans Pass continued stay-on and he had more than enough time to pick-off the four-year-old close home to prevail by a length and a quarter.

The unbeaten Joe’s Turn met with defeat for the first time in his three-race career when coming home a further seven and a half lengths adrift in third.
