Irish Pointers Dominate at Newbury

The opening three races at Newbury on Friday were won by Irish point-to-pointers who were all sold after their point-to-point appearances last Autumn.

First off the mark was the Nicky Henderson trained Jet Powered who posted an impressive eleven length victory over fellow Irish point-to-pointer Ittack Blue in the Coral Bet Bundles Maiden Hurdle.

The son of Jet Away was making his racecourse debut in the colours of his new owner Mrs Joe Donnelly.

The gelding was purchased by Highflyer Bloodstock from the Tattersalls Online Sale for £350,000 after winning his maiden at Borris House last December for handler Cormac Farrell.

Frere D’Armes was the second Irish pointer of the day to enter the winners enclosure after he won the Coral Racing Club Novices Handicap Chase for Dan Skelton.

The five-year-old son of Bathyrhon finished runner-up in his point-to-point maiden at Oldcastle for Wexford handler Donnchadh Doyle.

Since joining the Skelton team he has now won four races under rules for his owners the Belbroughton Racing Club.

Stay Away Fay an impressive winner of his maiden at Lingstown continued the winning trend of Irish point-to-pointers when landing the Coral Get Closer To The Action Novices Hurdle in the hands of Harry Cobden.

The Paul Nicholls trained gelding kept on gamely from the last to register a five length victory over Heezer Geezer from the Dan Skelton stable.

The son of Shantou who was previously a winner for Matthew Flynn O’Connor was subsequently sold to Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls for £305,000 after winning his maiden last December.
