Ballyvodock runner-up among ThoroughBid top lots
A busy Wednesday of bidding at ThoroughBid’s February Sale resulted in lots from the UK and Ireland selling to owners and trainers across the Atlantic and English Channel.
Sholokjack, rated 135 for Dan Skelton over fences, exchanged hands for £12,500 and will be heading to Grade 1-winning French trainer Hugo Merienne, while American businessman Matty Brooks secured Lot 4, '20 Jet Away (IRE) ex All The Roses (IRE), for £11,500 while bidding over breakfast from his home in the US.
Topping the sale was the Dominic Burke & Tim Syder-owned Speech Bubble, a black-type broodmare being sold with a free cover to Nathaniel. Jerry McGrath went to £25,000 for the Grade 2 and Listed-placed mare.
There was beginners’ luck for first-time bidders Harrison Antiques Racing, who landed Lot 1, 23' Rich History (IRE) ex Glamour Time (GB), and potential Point2Rules Bonus getter Pike Road for £18,000. The latter finished second on debut between the flags at Ballyvodock and can secure his new connections £5,000 if winning first time up Under Rules.
CEO of ThoroughBid, James Richardson, said: “Having parties from across the world engaging in the February Sale, and in some cases proving successful with their bids, is a big perk of our online platform. I know Matty [Brooks] was up having an early breakfast in the US in order to follow the sale, so we’re delighted he managed to get what looks to be a very exciting Jet Away store.
“Sholokjack was a nice horse to have in the sale and we’re pleased we managed to draw interest from outside of the UK and Ireland. Hugo Merienne is a top trainer, so it will be interesting to see what plans he has for the lightly-raced eight-year-old.
“We’re also really pleased with the sale of Speech Bubble for £25,000. Being entrusted by established figures like Dominic Burke and Tim Syder with the sale of a nice broodmare is another vote of confidence for our platform.”
