The remarkable Winged Leader landed his 26th victory between the flags at Moig South on Sunday taking him to within reach of Still William’s winning-most pointer title.
Still William currently holds the title for the winning-most point-to-pointer of all time when winning a total of 33 races for the late Helen Bryce Smith between 1959 and 1967.
John Hegarty and Jennifer O’Kane are no strangers when it comes to owning some prolific horses and have amassed a fantastic 90 odd wins as owners over the years. Their superb servant Winged Leader is the first horse to come within a realistic chance of breaking Still William’s record in 57 years.
Partnered by Maxine O’Sullivan on Sunday, the Winged Love-sired ten-year-old was registering his 13th consecutive win and a 26th victory in points when getting the better of Rockys Howya on the flat after the last fence in a very competitive nine-runner Ladies Open event at Moig South.
Trainer David Christie made the long journey to Moig South from his Leginn House Stables in Derrylin, County Fermanagh and reported afterwards.
“He’s an unbelievable horse to be doing what he’s doing and we’re delighted. As you saw the last day in Quakerstown he really skips along that good ground and he even gets through deep ground but he just finds that holding ground trickier to operate on”.
“I think with riders claim taken into account he was giving the runner-up 5lbs so that was a fair performance from both him and the runner-up.”
The versatile campaigner has proved that he can perform on different ground conditions and is en route to defending his 2023/24 Champion Pointer title with an amazing 100% strike rate so far with 4 wins from 4 runs.
