Dungarvan hat-trick helps Allen to pointing century

Darragh Allen achieved a career milestone on Sunday when registering his 100th point-to-point winner which he did in style at Dungarvan. with a notable hat-trick.

It was Terence O’Brien’s Cokoriko mare who supplied him with the all-important winner in the older mares’ maiden, as she struck the front after the second-last, and kept Tiffiny's Girl at bay as the line approached to score by a half-length in the colours of British owner Derrick Mossop.

Allen had moved onto the 99-winner mark between the flags at Quakerstown in early November, but the wait to reach the career century was certainly made worthwhile with the Dungarvan hat-trick.

He went on to ride Paul Kiely’s Somethinghonest to success in the very next race, the adjacent maiden, whilst the treble was completed in the older geldings’ maiden when the Padraig Butler-trained Vals Charm ran out a four-length winner.

Fittingly it was at the Waterford venue that Allen made his first appearance in the saddle in the pointing sphere back in 2012, and since then he has gone on to become provincial champion in the southern region in the 2023/24 campaign when riding a personal best 18 winners.

This latest milestone success comes after he registered his 50th points success
aboard Rock On Harry at Ballyvodock for handler Michelle Gannon in January 2022.

It was appropriate that his 100th success was secured for Terence O’Brien, with the Carrigtwohill handler responsible for supplying him with the greatest number of his point-to-point winners to date.

This latest success in Dungarvan has brought their tally of wins together in the pointing arena to 23, whilst Allen’s older brother Sean has also proven to be one of his greatest supporters, supplying him with 11 point-to-point victories.
