David Murphy is our latest rider to feature in our next generation section. From Co. Cork, twenty four-year-old David was in the winner’s enclosure at Ballinaboola on Sunday aboard his father Jeff’s Troll D’Oudairies in the older maiden. Murphy also steered Orchard hill to success at Turtulla in November for the Ruaidhri Tierney yard.
This is David’s third season to ride in point-to-points and he has ridden three winners to date. The Fermoy native rides out for Enda Bolger and Johnathon Sweeney.

How did you become involved in racing?
Most of my family were involved in racing when I was growing up so I developed an interest in it through them. My dad rode as a professional jockey for many years and had good success with Mick O’Toole. My brother Brian also rode as a professional and was based with Christy Roche in Ireland and then spent some time in England with Barney Curley.
As soon as I was old enough I started riding out. My brother is now based in America and he trains National Hunt horses over there. When I was finished in school I spent three years in America working for him and other trainers in both Florida and Kentucky.
What's your favourite course?
Liscarroll is definitely my favourite course so far as I rode my first winner there last year.

Give us a horse to watch out for?
Myself and my dad have a few horses to run in point-to-points. They are with Daniel Murphy just outside Midleton. We have a nice four-year-old Sholokhov filly that isn’t named yet but she will hopefully run this spring.
What was the best day of your racing life?
It is definitely riding my first winner at Liscarroll aboard TJ Goodtymes last March. She was also owned by my dad which was great.
Who’s your biggest influence?
My dad was always been a great help to me when I was growing up and has given me loads of advice since I started riding in point-to-points.
What improvements would you like to see to in point-to-points?
I think it would be great if point-to-points could be made as more of a day out for the non-racing people. It was great to see it happen at Dowth Hall and I think if other hunts could start adding something different we would see a huge change in people going racing.
Ambitions for this season?
I would like to try and get as many rides as possible throughout the season and get a few more winners on the board.
