Eoin Mahon is our latest rider to feature in our next generation section.
21-year-old Eoin was in the winner’s enclosure at Quakerstown on Sunday which is his local track when he steered the Noel Glynn-trained Mabeywhoknowsmabey to victory in the Hassett Considine Solicitors confined maiden.
This was Eoin’s second winner of the season as he also enjoyed success aboard Braize at Lisronagh in October.
Eoin got off the mark at Rathcannon last season when he rode Abigail Lynch to success for the Sam Curling yard.
Name: Eoin Mahon
Age: 21
Area: Shanaglish
How did you become involved in racing?
None of my family have horses so I was a bit of a late starter to it all. A neighbour of mine had a couple of hunters in and I started to give him a hand and then learned how to ride. I then started going to the late Jean O’Connor for some lessons which is where I got the bug for racing.
When I was 16 I started riding out for Pauric and Derek O’Connor which I loved so I decided I wanted to take out my licence.
When I finished school I went to Donald McCains for six months and then I came home and spent a year with Robert Tyner. I got great experience in both places and really enjoyed it.
I am currently riding out for Pauric, Noel Glynn, Brian McMahon and Angus King and also school for a few people throughout the season.
What's your favourite course?
It has to be my local track at Quakerstown. It was extra special to get a winner there on Sunday and also because of it being in the confined race.
What was the best day of your racing life?
Riding my first winner at Rathcannon aboard Abigail Lynch was definitely a memorable day.
Also I was very lucky to get the opportunity to ride Powersbomb in the amateur rider’s race at the Galway Festival last year which was a brilliant experience.
Do you do any sport outside of racing?
I play hurling for my local club Breag so I am looking forward to the season starting back up soon for the summer.
Do you have any horses of your own?
I have a share in a five-year-old gelding with my girlfirends father called Make The Most Of It who will hopefully be running in a few weeks.
Who’s your biggest influence?
Derek has definitely been my biggest influence. I don’t think we will ever see anyone like him again. He has helped me no end since I started riding and even now he still gives me loads of advice when we are schooling.
What is one of your favourite racing memories?
I don’t really have one particular memory but I always enjoyed going point-to-pointing with the O’Connors and learning about the sport each weekend.
What improvements would you like to see in point-to-pointing?
Its great there is more novice rider’s races during the season but I think it would be better if there could be more open and winners race for novice riders rather than just older maidens.
What are your plans for the future?
I love point-to-pointing and hopefully will be able to continue riding for as long as my weight allows.
