Name: Sarah McNamara
Age: 17
From: Asdee, Co. Kerry
McNamara a native of Asdee in County Kerry recorded her first point-to-point winner on her first ride at Dromahane on Sunday when guiding the Turlough O’Connor handled Cloudy Wednesday to victory in the five-year-old and upwards adjacent maiden.
How did you get started with horses?
My family had a riding schooling when I was younger so I’ve always been around horses. I used to do plenty of show-jumping and also hunted with the North Kerry Harriers.
I first got involved with racehorses when I joined Tom Connors inside in Listowel, I was with Tom for a year before I joined Turlough O’Connor.
How long have you been working with Turlough O’Connor?
I have been based with Turlough full-time for the last year and a half.
Was it always the plan to take out your Qualified Riders licence?
Yes it was always my intention to take out my licence when I joined Turlough’s.
It must have been a special day to ride a winner on your first ride, were you expecting a big run going into Sunday?
It was a big surprise to win on Sunday, I actually thought I was riding Turlough’s other horse in the race, Colditz Castle but he decided we would swamp the night before and he told me I would win on Cloudy Wednesday.
It was great to win on Cloudy Wednesday as he is a horse that I know very well as I ride him out nearly every morning.
What are your ambitions for remainder of the season?
Just to keep the head down and work hard and try get a few more opportunities
What do you think of the additional 5lb claim for riders with less than 5 winners in novice races?
I think it’s a brilliant addition, it really gives everybody a bit of a chance and taking extra five pounds off is a real help.
Is there any rider in particular that you think people should watch out for?
Adam Feeney is definitely one to keep an eye out for, I think he is a very under-rated rider.
Who would have been your biggest influence in racing?
Rachel Blackmore and Davy Russell they are brilliant ambassadors for our sport.
Do you have any other interests outside of racing?
Not really, horses take up to much of my time and they are really my passion.
