Next Gen | Shane Cotter

Name: Shane Cotter

Age:  17

From: Ballynoe, Co. Cork

It was a memorable day for the Ballynoe native Shane Cotter who registered his first winner between the flags when guiding the Billy Codd trained Special Prep to victory at Lingstown.

How did you get involved with horses?

We always had horses at home growing up, we always kept a couple of broodmares.  Then I started off doing a bit of hunting with the Conna Harriers.

Where was your first experience with racehorses?

I started going down to Eudora O’Connor’s and then I went over to Batty O’Connell’s.

Where are you working at present?

When I left school, I joined Denis Murphys this time last year and I am full-time with him now.

How did you come about working with Denis Murphy?

I went there the year before for a couple of weeks and really liked it, so decided to go full-time with him when I finished school.

Was it always the plan to take out your Qualified Riders licence?

Yes it has been from a very young age, it’s all I wanted to do.

Do you ride out for anyone else?

I ride out for Mick Murphy on Saturday.

How did the ride aboard Special Prep come about?

Denis Murphy actually got me the ride, he told me on Tuesday. I think Jamie Codd had rang Denis and he recommended me.

Did you know much about the horse?

No, it was my first day to ride him. Jamie just told me to take my time on him and see how it goes.  When I saw Vaucelet been pushed along three out, I thought we had a bit of chance then!

It must have been some thrill to ride your first winner?

Yea, it was brilliant! Some feeling.

Were any of your family there for the win on Sunday?

My father and grandfather were there on Sunday, they got a great kick out of the day!

What are your ambitions for this season?

Hopefully get a few more rides and hopefully a few more winners.

Any horses to follow for the season?

He has a really nice three-year-old by Getaway, that should be ready to run in March.  He looks really nice.

Is there any upcoming riders in Denis’ that we should be keeping an eye on?

Ross Berry he comes in three days a week into Denis’, he is someone to keep an eye out for.

Who is your biggest influence in racing?

Jamie Codd I suppose, he has achieved so much in his career and is a great person to look up to.

He has always been great to give advice also.

Have you any interests outside of racing?
I watch plenty of hurling and used to play with my local club St. Catherines.
