A grandson of Irish National winning trainer Dot Love, Matthew gained his first success in the sphere at the age of 17 courtesy of Down The Highway, a horse that his brother Timmy had also won on previously, at Punchestown in February 2023 on what was his first ride. The Meath native had started his career eventing, and was part of the gold medal winning Irish team at the 2022 European pony eventing championships.
