TRACK GUIDE
Tyrella point-to-point is inextricably linked with the East Down Foxhounds who have organised racing at the picturesque seaside venue for a number of decades.
The sandy soil composition ensures that the course dries very quickly allowing it to produce better ground than is customary for the time of year that fixtures are held at the course in the heart of winter. Starting at the end of the home straight, the runners face a short run to the first fence, before facing a quick steep climb as they turn right-handed and begin the run into the back straight. Racing downhill, they then jump fence two, which is the first of two fences along the back straight, before their steady descent levels out at the third.
There is a further run on the level parallel to the entrance road before climbing on the right-handed bend into the home straight. The fourth fence, which also acts as the final obstacle, has been relocated and now comes up quite quickly in the home straight, leaving what is one of the longest run-ins at a point-to-point to the line.
A fifth fence is located after the winning post before the field pass their starting point and complete a lap of the track which measures just over seven furlongs in circumference.
Grade 2 winner, Little King Robin, recorded her first success at the course in in 2013.
MARK O'HARE
It is a sharp three miles at Tyrella and it is a track where it suits to have a horse with experience, as things can happen quite fast around there.
They tend to go a good gallop from the start and there is no let up from there. Having a horse that is a sharp jumper helps and it is definitely an advantage to race handily or make the running as it is quite difficult to come from far off the pace.
They usually get better ground than you would expect for the time of the year, so it suits a good moving horse.
