First success over jumps for Turner in Tetretema Cup

Jockey Luke Turner gained his first success over jumps as Annamix ran out a locally-trained winner of the INHSC Tetretema Cup at Gowran Park on Saturday.

Twice placed in graded company when running in the Rich Ricci colours, the grey 11-year-old had his first outing in Patrick Mullins’ own silks when pulling-up at Naas a month earlier.

With Turner who had been in the saddle for that seasonal re-appearance remaining aboard for the Tetretema Cup, the pair again took their time in the heavy ground as they raced in the rear of the field in company with last year’s Bishopscourt Cup victor Fr Gilligansvoyage.

All the while, it was the odds-on favourite, a former stablemate of Annamix that took the field along under Rob James.

A slow leap from the four-time open winner at the tenth allowed the pursing The Wests Awake and Early Doors to come on terms, however with the race having been steadily run, plenty of the six runners held claims entering into the home straight.

However, Turner got a great tune out of the 2022 Topham-third coming to the final open ditch, and once striking the front at the second-last fence, the pair swiftly put the race to bed to run out a comfortable ten-length winner for Willie Mullins.

Early Doors got the best of the battle for second with The Wests Awake, with the favourite trailing in behind them in fourth.
