UK Point-to-Point Round Up 2nd January

One fixture took place in the UK at the weekend and this was at Cottenham, Cambridgeshire. Ex Irish pointers accounted for three of last weekend UK pointing winners. We take a closer look below at where these winners started off their racing careers.

Call Me Vic, who recorded a victory at Barbury International just a few weeks earlier followed up this success when battling it out to the line with Ballykan in the novice riders contest. The son of Old Vic was guided to victory by 17-year-old Albi Tufnell, from Cirencester, who was riding his sixth career winner on his first visit to Cottenham for handler Sally Randell, while sporting the colours of his mother Jane. The 13-year-old landed his debut run in Irish point-to-points at Dromahane back in 2012 for handler Adrian Maguire.

Previously a three-time winner in UK points Laser Beam, who was appearing for the first time this season, once again came home in front when running out a five-length winner for Timworth-based handler Andrew Pennock in the hands of Sam Lee. Paul O’Connell started the son of Ask off in Irish point-to-points in 2017, running him four times, with his final effort being his best when he was beaten in third by only six and a half lengths at Templencarriga point-to-point in a six-year-old geldings’ maiden.

The James Owen-trained Fiddler Of Dooney combined with Alex Chadwick to win the three-mile Open Maiden by a neck, with the pair just holding off the Philip Rowley runner-up Quinta Do Mar. Originally handled by Ciaran Murphy, the son of Yeats was runner-up on two occasions in Irish point-to-points in April 2019, before being run twice in hunter chases.
