Jet Of Magic proves too good on debut at Punchestown

Jet Of Magic was another first crop winner by promising stallion Jet Away as he made a winning debut in the 2m 4f five-year-old geldings point-to-point bumper at Punchestown on Monday.

Confidently ridden by Jamie Codd, the bay gelding was produced on the outside of rivals rounding the home bend and once moving his way to the front inside the final quarter of a mile, there only looked like there would be one winner.

The 10/3 joint favourite was always doing enough up front to fend off a wall of challengers in behind who battled it out for the minor honours – with Goals Tiep, Masked Crusader and Clifton Warrior engaged in that protracted tussle up the straight.

It was Colin McBratney’s 22/1 shot Goals Tiep who came out best in that battle with Masked Crusader having to settle for the third spot.

“Beforehand we were saying that with him and the four-year-old earlier that if we were going pointing, what we are used to doing, we would have fancied the two of them so it is nice to get one of them in.

“He is savage to jump, about 16hh3 by Jet Away a new sire, I think he will be a nice horse going forward.

“Jamie (Codd) said that he knew he was a winner a mile out it was just a case of getting there, he said when he got to the front he was a little bit lary, but other than that he was very good.

“He is very backward, he is a very big horse and very light. When he fills into his frame after a summer’s grass I’d like to think that he would do well novice hurdling and chasing definitely.”
