Breakthrough first track success for Colin Motherway

Colin Motherway recorded his first success under rules when teaming-up with his long-time friend Jamie Codd to secure the p2p.ie mares’ point-to-point bumper at Tipperary.

The Cork native, who rode over 200 winners in the pointing fields throughout his lengthy career in the saddle, and since turning his hand to training has already sent out over 25 winners in that sphere.

That included with his breakthrough track victor Time To Rocco who had opened her account in Tinahely back in February before she finished a very creditable third in the point-to-point bumper at Cork on Easter Monday.

With that experience behind her, Codd kept the Shirocco mare wide throughout in the 2m 2f contest ensuring that she was never outside of the first half-dozen runners.

As Queshi Bridge began to thread water up front, the five-year-old mare was able inch her way to the front with Codd’s wide passage allowing him to secure a position on the stand-side rail.

From here she was able to repel all challengers including the joint-favourite Kates Hill, whom she was able to reverse the form with having finished behind her at Cork a month earlier.

By the line three and a quarter length separated the pair in favour of Time To Rocco, with four and a half lengths back to the Kildorrery winner Kym Eyre.

“They went steady but she travelled away and did it well,” the winning rider said.

“That is for a good friend of mine Colin Motherway, so it is nice for all the family. He does a great job with loads of point-to-point winners and is from a brilliant family.

“She is a big strong girl, she loves a fence, she won a point-to-point and she should have no problem winning a maiden hurdle and then going over fences.”
