A graduate of pony racing, Ciaran Fennessy was one of the leading riders on the Sourthern circuit for a number of years, having partnered his first winner, Humble Jim, at Cloyne in 2007. By 2011, he was crowned Champion Novice Rider and further added to his title hauls when beating Derek O'Connor and Jamie Codd by four winners to the Southern Title in 2016. That year's total of 26-winners saw him match his previous season's best from a year earlier. Following an injury enforced 15-month absence after breaking his pelvis in a fall at Rathcannon, the former Fermoy Sportsman of the Year, returned in January 2018 before ultimately retiring from race-riding later that year.
