James Costello's first ride was aboard Ask Berlioz for local trainer Val O'Brien in a bumper at Ballinrobe in April 2023. James made his point-to-point debut at Tattersalls in April 2024 aboard Getsetgo for Paul Gilligan and within a month came close to winning a four-year-old maiden for Tony Martin, when he rode Wing It Prof to finish second at Necarne. It was Tony Martin who provided James with his first points success when Lyreen Og won at Borris House in March 2025.
